When Your Kid Takes A Lack Of Playing Time Better Than You
The more time ticked off the clock, the more upset I became. Here it is third quarter with my sons varsity team up by as many as a dozen, and my son had yet to play.
Seated behind his bench, my eyes gazed back and forth from the game to him looking frustrated. I knew my boy was upset. He’s never been good at hiding emotion.
I’ll have to talk to him about that.
Then coach subbed him in with a little over 3 minutes left in the third. He quickly went to work. Within a few possessions, he hit a driving floater from the top of the key and a short jumper.
I believe he finished with 6 points. With all the points I’ve watched him score, those six made me the most proud.
He didn't get in when he felt he should. But when he did he made the most and best of it. That’s character. Not pouting or sulking. Just taking advantage of any and every opportunity. And I’m proud of him for it.
After the game I reminded him to be mindful of his demeanor. Sit up straight, clap and cheer your teammates on. Be in the fold during timeouts. Keep a positive attitude.
Unfortunately the next few games he didn’t see any playing time. Honestly it pissed me off. Especially after seeing other players mess up. But as an adult I…
