Real Spill: Who said parenting was easy?
Headline: 16-year-old shot, killed by officers
I first heard wind of this story in the salon. Another stylist and her client were talking about the police officer shooting of a 16 year old boy in our city.
Apparently, he and a group of people were spotted with guns at a gas station at 11:30pm, by drug enforcement detectives. When police rolled up on the lot, the crowd dispursed. The teen was followed into an alley where he allegedly tripped and dropped a pistol. Police say he reached for it and well…you know the rest.
His mother confirmed him having a gun that night because she was with him.
After reading articles from various outlets about the shooting, there was one thing I noticed in the interviews from his family: lack of accountability.
I hate to say this. Mainly because a young man is gone who shouldn’t be and a family is in mourning. But as parents we have to do our absolute best in the raising and guiding of our children.
Over the last five years there’s been an uptick in officer involved shootings of unarmed black people. It’s scary out here. Especially for our black men. There is no excuse for the numbers of black people who have died at the hands of law enforcement.
