Rap group Whodini composed the perfect chorus for their song, Friends, back in ‘84.

Friends

How many of us have them?

Friends

Ones you can depend on

The other day I was reminded by a “friend” how I didn’t have any friends. How ironic though she considered me to be one of her friends, and I’m guessing vice versa.

The statement jilted me a bit. Not because it came from someone I considered to be a friend. But because the statement was true. She was right. I don’t have many friends.

And that is a reality I’ve struggled with throughout my adult life.

Childhood seemed so easy peasy. Going out to play until the street lights come on. Rinsing out jelly jars to trap lightning bugs, running races down the street, walking to the park and candy stores. You can’t help but to make friends.

Then you grow and become more your own person. Childhood friends don’t grow up with you they grow sideways and never change.

The older you become the more difficult it is to make new friends let alone hold on to the old ones.

Adulthood can feel limited to work, family, and bills. Who has the time or energy for play?
