Saint Louis rapper Sexxy Red may be new to the commercial rap scenes but her content isn’t. Last year her hit single, “Poundtown”, caught everyone’s attention with the notable lyrics, “my c**chie pink/my bootyhole brown”. Since then she’s featured on songs with artist from Lil Durk, Sukiyana to Drake.

Her sexually explicit lyrics and low vibe behavior in videos have garnered much criticism. And I must say, the criticism she’s received is embarrassing.

Sexually explicit lyrics coupled with degenerate behavior in Hip Hop are nothing new. As an 80’s baby I vividly remember hearing NWA’s, “She Swallowed It”, in sixth grade. At the time it was unlike anything we’d ever heard. Boys thought it was funny. Girls disgusting. What we didn’t know was that would become the beginning of obscene rap we’ve come desensitized to currently.

Yes, we’ve seen the success of socially conscious, positive artists like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole. Yet pale in comparison to the number of rappers with profane, misogynistic, violent laced lyrics who gain widespread popularity fast.
