My student loans were forgiven

And it’s about darn time

When President Joe Biden announced his plan for student loan relief, I like so many borrowers, were extremely hopeful the plan would come to fruition.

Us Gen Xer’s were born at a unique time. Many of us were children of the baby boomers, who didn't need a college degree to have success in the job market. Till this day my mom speaks on how they were able to get good jobs with GM, the U.S. Postal Service, McDonnell Douglas (currently Boeing), among many others straight out of high school. Those coming up in the 80’s and 90’s weren’t so fortunate.

We were told the quickest and easiest way to the American Dream was a college education. Thanks to the narrative of earning higher pay with better job prospects, with a diploma in tow. Many parents drank the juice. And encouraged their kids to attend college borrowing thousands in loans, in hopes of not having to work laborious jobs like them.

Many of us did, including myself. By the time I graduated in the mid 2000’s, I was hit by a picky job market with more candidates than opportunities.

Between attending job fairs, revamping my resume, and interviewing with temp agencies to several employers in my area they all led to one thing: nothing. To date I have the stack of rejection letters bound by rubber band.
