It’s time to debunk the myth that men can’t be clout chasers and gold diggers

Long before Kanye West rapped, “Now I ain’t saying she a gold digga/but she ain’t messin wit no broke n***a”, women were coined gold diggers for dating high profile men with money.

What has rarely been considered, is that the same can be held true for men who date women of a higher financial and celebrity status. It is assumed the couple met and began dating organically. The woman desiring to date a man of equal or greater stature, while the man desires to date a woman on equal financial footing as a means of financial protection.

2023 has proved different.

Olympic goliath Simone Biles’ husband, (What’s his name?) claimed he was the “catch” with his whole chest on a podcast, sending the internet into a frenzy.

Super sports agent Rich Paul has more eyeballs on him since beginning his relationship with star singer Adele.

Kansas City Chief’s tight end Travis Kelce began dating Taylor Swift and has been on commercials and the conversation of sports talk banter more than he’s ever been.

Each woman previously mentioned is more accomplished and/or wealthy than their counterpart. So what gives?

Why aren’t these men being called out for being clout chasing, gold diggers? Because they had their own money and fame before the relationships?

It’s 2024 and past time to do away with the double standard that only women are gold diggers. Men are just as calculating as women. They plot and strategize too. The relationships they enter aren’t all for love.

It’s a new year, new time and I’m here for all of it. Relationships are or should be equal opportunity after all.

As my Aunt has said, “What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.”
