I’m A Good Parent…I Think

Now that I’m a bit older as are the kids, its got me in a reflective type mood.

Am I being a good parent daily? Have I been the best parent I can be?

I like to think so. Running through the past ten years of events, with a focus on the last four, here’s why:

Four years ago I resigned from my job of nearly ten years. It paid well and the benefits were good, but the scheduling sucked. I was hardly home during the week and worked nights on weekends. Holidays off were a luxury only if they fell on an off day. Seeing no change in the scheduling in sight, and with the kids getting older I decided to leave.

For the next year I was unemployed, virtually living off savings. Now my family time was unlimited. And I loved it.

After a year off I took on another job that paid less than half of my previous employer. It was with the same school district as my kids, so I was off when they were. This was great! Except it was a struggle financially and that is never fun.

There’s nothing like having the time but no money and vice versa. Striking the work, life balance is so hard. But its one I’ve always maneuvered and strived for.

Knowing this I have no problem switching jobs or careers if it will allow me to be more present as a parent.
