The pen and paper have always been my best friends.

To that little girl who couldn’t wait to get home from school. Sprawled on her bedroom floor, with a half torn folder filled with loose leaf paper, ready for the stories and writings from a nine year olds mind.

My talent is God given.

And never did I think, money is something I could earn from my written words.

It’s funny. The one place I almost couldn’t stand to go as a child, would be the very thing to save me as an adult.

Church.

As a kid Sunday mornings could be brutal. Awaking early to get simultaneously scratched and tickled while mom helps you put on your panty hose. Then its your slip.

“What is this for?”

“To hide your panty line,” mom says. Then its your dress or skirt. And the scratchy blouse and patent leather dress shoes you secretly hate.

Then your off to the sounds of the mhmms hmmms, preach, and yes Lord’s no one seems to tire of speaking or hearing.

Mom said after eighteen we no longer had to attend if we didn’t want. And that’s exactly what I did.

Beside a wedding or funeral, I never set foot inside a church again.
