Late Spring I reconnected with a former co worker. The call was surprising considering we hadn’t spoke in a few years. I’m always up for a good chat with good people. It was good hearing from him. For the next forty-five minutes we laughed and joked while catching up on the current events of our lives.

Before ending the call he extended an invitation to lunch or dinner when my schedule allowed. I agreed and said I’d keep in touch.

Now, there’s one thing I do on evenings out with male associates: offer to pay my half. Always.

The rule is whoever asks, pays. However, this new modern dating era has flipped this thing all around. Women have to be thrice as diligent in the company of men, date or not. Offering to pay for your own meal shows a man you are willing and capable to do so. It rules out having a sense of entitlement or expectation of men, keeping you in the drivers seat.

Small actions speak volumes.

For our meetup we opted to revisit a restaurant frequented before. To our surprise and disliking, the setup had changed. There was no host to seat patrons or waiters to…
