Feeling isolated as a writer? Try this.
There is a gift and a curse with writing. The gift: it can be done alone regardless of experience, on, offline, or both. The curse: it can be done alone and usually is.
Many creatives are loners; introverts who gravitate towards things that can be done solo. A laptop, pen and pad, or whatever is used to get the words out is our happy place, where we’re free from crowds to express ourselves unbothered.
However this isolation if not balanced, can lead to a disconnect from people. To combat these feelings for myself, here’s some things I’m giving a try:
Getting others involved
Just recently I’ve been reaching out to different people with questions on a certain topic. I prefer text over talk to have an accurate record on what was said. It’s been fun picking their brain.
A teacher’s assistant in high school told me if you’re quiet people will talk. I’d like to add that people also love to talk about themselves. Being an open, inquisitive ear is a great way to not only connect with others, but can also lend great new material to write about.
Interview family
I’ve been meaning to do this forever. Particularly with my mom and grandmother. I’ve asked questions in the past on certain things in their lives…
