At 21 he chose to get a vasectomy
And everyone thought he was crazy
One of the perks of being the younger sibling is getting to hang around your older siblings friends. I learned a lot in my younger years through conversations and observations from the older kids. Although I can’t say all my findings were good, albeit, they were all educational.
A good friend of my sisters’ friend would hang out with them periodically. They’d all hit 21, 22. What does a young adult crew do?
Club from Thursday to Sunday.
One day while they were hanging out I sparked a conversation with this friend. The word around the crew was he had gotten a vasectomy. Now, this was not the most mainstream word in the late 90’s. I kinda knew what it was then I didn’t. Once it was explained, I thought why would a guy so young want to terminate his chances of ever becoming a father?
When I asked him why he had gotten a vasectomy, his answer was as simple and calm as a summers breeze, “I don’t want kids.”
He elaborated a little more with, “I just know I don’t want to have them. I don’t want that.”
He couldn’t have been anymore than 21, 22 years old.
His response amazed me. For him, as a man to know he didn’t ever want children, and to actually go through with the process was baffling yet fascinating.
It’s very rare for a man to make that sort of decision, no matter how many children he has or in his case, hasn’t. Gotta respect a man taking responsibility before having to take responsibility.
More men should.
