A Few Thoughts I Had After My Son’s First Accident

Teaching my 16 year old to drive has been one of the most nerve wracking experiences of my life.

Brings back memories of when I was learning to drive. Now I know the whirlwind of emotions my parents felt.

He doesn’t get a whole lot of practice in so that may be against him a little bit. So a couple mornings ago on the way to school, he didn’t complete the turn into the parking lot well enough, and crashed into the gate.

Unfortunately, there were some other kids hanging out in the parking lot to witness the incident.

Now don’t get me wrong, I was pissed. Mainly because he’s made that turn just fine before. So why that particular day he didn’t do as usual is beyond me. I didn’t want to come down on him too hard. So I instructed him to park in a space, and told him to have a good day.

By the time he got out and began walking towards the school, some of the same kids who saw him crash into the gate, were too. I could hear them cracking jokes and laughing at him, as I adjusted myself in the drivers seat.

My only concern at that time was him. He was upset because of what he did. A perfectionist who doesn’t like to make mistakes, he takes every little mishap so hard. He doesn’t want to disappoint anyone. Especially family.
